Writing creative poetry is something I love to do but making money at it is never easy. Poets need to be creative in business in order generate income. Poets can brainstorm with their friends, publishers, poetry groups and life coaches to generate ideas. Creative poetry ideas can come from relationships, listening to others, life stories, stories in the newspaper, or a walk in the park. Sometimes all you have to do is look around you because poetry is found right under your nose.

Creative poems are found in advertisements, greeting cards, and TV commercials. Songs are made up of creative poems added to music. Poems are combined with creative sculpture parks, painting, and audio tours, or create poems for special occasions. Creative poetry can be written for wedding announcements, given to guess at hotels, and published in chapbooks. It can be read out-loud at open mike nights and used to move people’s opinion. Creative poetry and art can are combine and published in books or shown in an art galleries. Greeting card companies buy hundreds of creative poems each year.  The play “Cats” is made up of a series of creative poems and has travel around the country.

Writers and creative people occasionally become creatively blocked and need to jump-start their creativity. There are several ways to promote your creativity including joining a writers group, carrying around a small notebook to write in, really listening to the people around you, interviewing people, and looking up some keywords on topics that you are interested in. One way to jump-start your creative juices is by taking yourself out on an artist date or a writers date. You take yourself out alone or with friends on a creative date to fill your inner well with images and ideas. These trips can include a trip to the bookstore, a movie, a sculpture garden, a book reading, a walk in the woods, a trip down to the shore, a poetry reading, music, art events, or a great play. There are images and ideas all around us that can fill our inner creative well up. The key is too really see, hear, smell, and feel what is around you and not just walk by it.

I want to feel the grass under my feet, smell the roses, taste the nectar of a peach, and hear the sound of the rushing waterfall. I want to savor each moment I hear the birds singing and I want to watch their amusing dance. I love the sand in my toes, the red clay I can mold, and the gently breeze as the clouds move above me. I love the shape of seashells, starfish, and the roar of the ocean. I love to hear the sound of children laughing and the wind running through their hair. I want to touch the newborn babies and hold them gently in my arms. I want to chew each piece of food slowly, so that I remember each taste to the fullest. I want to smell the strong scent of fresh coffee and the sweet scent of cinnamon buns. I want to really see the people around me and not just walk by someone because they are homeless.  Learn to listen with all of your sense and your writing will be rich and your painting will be beautiful.

Created a new promise today to take in everything around you and build your inner creative well with all of your senses. Hear, smell, see, touch, and taste what is around you. Try something new to eat, go to a new place, visit someone you have not seen in a while, and change your routine. Make a date with yourself alone or with a few friends. Engage in creative writing, experiment with new paints or a new painting style, or listen to music. Try to imitate a master painter, take a class, use a creative journal, or become a mentor. Find a life coach who is creative to help you jump-start your career.

Nick Bantock is the author of several books including the Griffin and Sabine series. He is a masterful storyteller who combines art history, psychology, and images together, which keeps his audience in suspense. Griffin and Sabine is a series, which tells a story of two people who are captivated by each other, try to meet, but seem to elude each other. There are letters to read, postcard images to view, symbolism to analyzes, and collages to get lost in. His books create an interacive experience as you pull out each letter from its envelope; you began to feel the characters presences. The mystery, suspense and loving characters compel the reader to continue to the end, all in one sitting. His artwork is an inspiration to his viewers. I highly recommend his books to jump start your creativity, increase your motivation, and boast your creative energy. If you are blocked, sit down, and absorb one of his books or the whole series for inspiration.
